A geologic cultural treasure. Friendly and informative park rangers.
Wonderful area to explore with a free guided tour from a ranger or volunteer. Whether interested in prehistory, geology, or nature, the guides are knowledgeable. I suggest you call ahead of time to get your place on the tour since they only give so many tours per day and you can't go to the quarry unguided.
For the last 13,000 years or so, this is where folks in this part of the continent got their tools - arrowheads, hammers, scrapers, etc. Thus, this is more of an intellectual destination than many national parks and monuments. The natural beauty is fine, but folks go primarily because of the place's historical significance. I'll add that this place is up to the national-park standards; everything perfectly clean, great architecture, excellent little museum, extremely helpful park rangers, and great guided hikes. One highlight: holding rocks which were handled by artisans long millennia ago. That's something which is hard to find elsewhere in this hemisphere.
Wow such an incredible place. History literally laying on the ground. Everybody on the caprock needs to visit this spot.
I had been hearing about the AFQ for a while and really could not imagine what the big deal was. Joe Minh made it a wonderful and informative hike. About a mile up and about a mile down. Joe showed us dozens of plants and rock formations and, of course, the quarries. He was knowledgeable and fun. It was a thoroughly great and easy hike. Highly recommend.
